Tech Talk: Upgrading Truck Bumpers with a Backup Camera or Front Camera

So you want to get a new bumper, but you’re scared it’ll block your front-facing or back-up cameras. You’re right to worry, because most aftermarket bumpers do cover your cameras.

But you don’t have to choose between stock and quality aftermarket bumpers. Fab Fours offers high-quality steel bumpers that are protective and compatible with back-up and front-facing cameras.

What is ADAS?

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (often shortened to ADAS) use the latest tech to automate parts of driving. It reduces human error and helps you avoid dangerous collisions. This modern tech is great to have and improves the driver experience (but it’s not a replacement for aware, safe driving behaviors).

Things like automatically braking when you are too close to another vehicle or might crash, keeping you in your lane without you even shifting the wheel, and alerting you when you’re about to back into a curb are just a small part of what ADAS technology can do.

Prominent features include:

  • Lane Departure Warning/Correction
  • Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Blind Spot Detection
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Pedestrian Detection/Avoidance
  • Traffic Sign Recognition

ADAS is essentially your co-pilot, making driving safer, smoother, and way more fun.

What Is a Front-Camera or Backup Camera?

A front camera or backup camera is a compact, weatherproof camera mounted in, on or near the front or rear bumper. It feeds you a live view of critical blind spots.

Now, if you’re imagining them as some everyday dashcam, think again. Where dash cams record footage for evidence, bumper cameras exist solely to get you a real-time view of what the body of the vehicle hides. This is instrumental when off-roading, towing, or parking. Whether front or rear, these are optical cameras—they give you a live video feed, not radar or automated braking.

There are two types of bumper cameras: Back-Up and Front-Facing Camera.

Front-Facing Cameras: Front-facing cameras are your key to full front visibility. They solve the huge blind spot created by tall hoods, lifted suspensions, and bull bars, which conceal several feet of ground directly ahead of the truck.

If you’re an off-roader, a front-facing camera will let you spot rocks, ruts, and ledges when cresting hills or going places where the trail disappears from view. So you can avoid scrapes, scratches, getting stuck in tough terrain, and sudden, dangerous drop-offs.

For everyday driving, front bumper cameras help with pulling in, avoiding curbs and parking blocks, and pulling forward in tight garages or trailheads.

Back-Up Cameras: Reversing gets a whole lot easier with rear bumper cameras. These cover the low zone directly behind the tailgate that mirrors and the rear glass can’t see.

These cameras truly earn their keep when hitching a trailer solo, reversing down a boat ramp, and backing into a campsite or tight trail turnaround.

Why It’s So Hard to Upgrade Bumpers With ADAS Technology

ADAS-equipped bumpers house radar sensors, ultrasonic parking sensors, back-up cameras, and cameras. This makes upgrades tricky because many factors can throw off ADAS systems.

Paint thickness, material type, and misalignment of parts can interfere with radar performance. And, ADAS sensors and cameras often require specialized calibration after aftermarket bumper installation. This calibration requires manufacturer-specific software, specialized targets, laser measuring equipment, and much more.

Very few aftermarket manufacturers know how to reliably navigate these problems without requiring additional parts, steps or costs. So, many aftermarket bumpers are incompatible with ADAS technologies. They cause a whole bunch of problems: aftermarket bumpers will block your cameras, trigger false alarms, and feed you bad reads when you’re navigating tight spaces.

This status quo forces you to choose: do you want the elevated style and superior protection of aftermarket bumpers, or the ADAS compatibility of stock?

With Fab Fours, You Can Have Both: Functionality & Style

You don’t need to choose between quality/style and modern safety features. Fab Fours has designed steel bumpers that allow ADAS to operate seamlessly, without you needing to compromise on protection or resort to buying third-party solutions. Our line of SmartSteel bumpers is fully ADAS-compatible.

SmartSteel components are designed to align with available OEM specifications, including strict adherence to material standards, optical clarity, mounting tolerances, electrical characteristics, and environmental durability.

SmartSteel bumpers keep your cameras’ view clear and use precision-cut sensor holes so your sensors keep working as they should.

We worked with a third-party testing and validation partner to ensure sensor compatibility and compliance throughout the engineering process.

SmartSteel Bumpers are fully compatible with:
