Tech Talk: Upgrading Bumpers With Lane-Tracing Assist
You pulled the trigger on getting the expensive, tech-forward 4x4. It has Lane-Tracing Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, and even Automatic Emergency Braking. But your bumper’s looking a little meek—and meek isn’t what you want between your ride and 4,000 pounds of oncoming metal. It’s not up to snuff, but that heavy-duty aftermarket bumper you’ve been eyeing is. Problem is: you’re scared the bumper will throw off your ride’s ADAS systems.
If this is you, we have big news: Fab Fours bumpers don’t mess with your ADAS systems. In fact, they’ve been engineered to work with them.

What’s ADAS?
ADAS stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, and it’s a cluster of built-in safety technologies that help drivers avoid dangerous accidents. These systems use a combination of cameras, radars, and other sensors to monitor the road and either warn you of danger or automatically intervene before accidents occur.
This modern tech is a great backup and can greatly improve your driving experience. Now, this technology acts more as a ‘just in case’ measure and is not a replacement for aware, safe driving behaviors.
Still, the ADAS features are next-level. Things like automatically braking when you’re too close to another vehicle or might crash, keeping you in your lane without you even shifting the wheel, and alerting you when you’re about to back into a curb are just a small part of what ADAS technology can do.
Prominent features include:
- Lane Departure Warning/Correction
- Automatic Emergency Braking
- Blind Spot Detection
- Adaptive Cruise Control
- Pedestrian Detection/Avoidance
- Traffic Sign Recognition
What Is Lane-Tracing Assist?
Lane-Tracing Assist (LTA) uses front-facing cameras to detect lane markers and road lines to keep your vehicle centered. LTA automatically maintains a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you and works in tandem with Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC). If the system thinks you’re unintentionally drifting toward a boundary, it may provide a visual, audible, or steering-wheel warning.
LTA can also assist when passing other vehicles. So that vehicle in your blind spot that’s getting a little too close during a pass? Lane-Tracing Assist might reposition your vehicle to create more space.
Lane-Tracing Assist also works with more robust ADAS features like the Emergency Driving Stop System (EDSS). EDSS monitors steering wheel and pedal movements to detect if you become unresponsive. If you don’t respond to alerts prompting you to take control, EDSS can bring the vehicle to a stop. LTA intervention is usually brief and intended to help prevent a departure. It doesn’t steer at length for you. So, no sleeping at the wheel allowed!
Note: not all vehicles have the same ADAS features, so it’s important to check your vehicle to see what’s actually there.
Why It’s So Hard to Upgrade Bumpers With Lane-Tracing Assist
ADAS-equipped bumpers house a lot of finicky sensors that can be thrown off by the smallest things: paint thickness, bumper material type and misaligned parts. Plus, ADAS sensors and cameras often require specialized calibration after aftermarket bumper installation. This calibration requires manufacturer-specific software, specialized targets, laser measuring equipment, and much more.
Very few aftermarket manufacturers know how to reliably navigate these problems without requiring additional parts, steps or costs. So, many aftermarket bumpers are incompatible with ADAS technologies. They cause a whole bunch of problems: aftermarket bumpers will block your cameras, trigger false alarms, and feed you bad reads when you’re navigating tight spaces. Or, even if they do work, require you to purchase additional mounting hardware or relocation kits to make it work with their designs.
This status quo forces you to choose: do you want the elevated style and superior protection of aftermarket bumpers, or the ADAS functionality of stock?

SmartSteel Bumpers are fully compatible with:
- Front-Facing Cameras
- Back-Up Cameras
- Automatic Emergency Braking
- Lane-Tracing Assist
Smart, Strong, and One of a Kind
Lower-quality aftermarket bumpers block factory sensors. They disable Lane-Tracing Assist and trigger the dashboard warning lights in error. That’s because they weren’t meant for cars with factory tech.
SmartSteel bumpers are engineered for ADAS systems. They’re made for those with an adventurous spirit, offering a tech-forward ride. That’s the SmartSteel Difference.
